Hiring a Wedding Photographer

Hiring a wedding photographer is no separate than hiring an employee. You are paying them - even if it is just for the day - they are your employee. And no matter how gorgeous the pictures are - if you don't have a good rapport with your photographer it will show in your pictures.

The Resume:
In today's day and age - the internet is a great place to start. Almost every photographer I know has a website and a blog. Think this their resume. Are you looking for former wedding photos? Or do you want something more artistic? Will this photographer be able to capture your wedding day in a way that you want to remember it?

The Interview
Meet with more than one photographer. Get their background. Ask for referrals. Ask questions. What is there approach? Have they photographed your location before? What is their inspiration? Make it clear what your expectations are - just as you would do for an employee. Also ask about logistics - do they have a backup photographer? Do they have insurance?

"I like to meet with my couples a few times before the wedding and get a feel for their personalities" says Brad Ross, a Nj based photographer. "There ideas and visions are leading to me. I want to be sure that I capture their wedding day in the exact way that they want to remember it."

Some photographers will also offer in an engagement photo shoot as part of their package. Use this as an opportunity to get comfortable with the photographer. If you don't commonly like to be in photos, get comfortable in front of the camera. And learn to smile, smile, smile. You'll be doing a lot of it on your wedding day.

The Offer Letter
Any reputable photographer will make you sign a contract. It's the agreement and terms for the day. No matter what they told you when you met with them - read it, carefully. Make sure that they have included all you agreed on - including the number of hours, if and how they will furnish you with proofs (printed and/or on a Cd) and how many, the cost for overtime, voyage costs, etc.

Start Date
A few weeks before your wedding date, call your photographer. Make sure you're both clear on the start time, location, contingency plans for weather and any other details they need to know. Exchange cell phone numbers just in case. If there is a list of photos that you want, furnish it to them at that time so you make sure to get them all.

Performance tell
After the wedding has come and gone - you should get your photos in the timeframe that you agreed upon with your photographer, in the format that you agreed on. If you think your photographer was great - tell them so. Send them a note, email them or post to their blog. The best way you can thank them is with a referral.
